Is the familiar always comfortable? This is a question Townsend aims to explore through the physicality of materials. The contrasting textures and forms visible within the androgynous outcomes would suggest otherwise.
Responding to an eclectic visual catalogue, the development process includes techniques such as photography, painting and printmaking. This experimental approach is in keeping with the playful methods and mediums utilised within the workshop.
Combining tradition with contemporary possibilities allows precious stones to sparkle against deliberately mistreated surfaces, ‘diamonds in the rust’.
Drawing inspiration from domestic (interior) and urban (exterior) surroundings enables the ornate and the corroded to sit in conjunction.
Townsend current collection intertwines the past with the present, exploring the concept of modern day heirlooms; referencing decorative furnishings within her Grandparents home and the generational nostalgia she associates with the industrial city of Portsmouth.
